If platforms function as de facto publishers by generating authoritative-sounding content, they should accept publisher-like obligations for accuracy and transparency. If AI companies flood information systems with synthetic certainty, they should invest in provenance tracking, content watermarking, and forensic capabilities as accountability infrastructure rather than optional features.

Current legal frameworks lag behind technological reality. Section 230 protections designed for neutral platforms may not be appropriate for systems that actively author content. The regulatory sandbox approach advocated by some lawmakers risks expanding legal protections first while building accountability mechanisms later—a sequence that could prove disastrous for information integrity.

When reality becomes optimizable, the highest bidders get to define what counts as fact.
